New for 2012/2013 is the Montane Ultra Trail 26 Series. The 3 events provide the opportunity for runners to ‘step up’ to longer trail distances, whilst also providing a shorter and faster alternative for seasoned ultra runners. We’ll be working hard to ensure that these event are a success, whilst generating the atmosphere you’ve come to expect at the 50&100 mile events. Entries open 9:00am, Saturday September 1st, you can enter at www.ultratrail26.com
The Montane Lakeland 50&100 Team
The Montane Lakeland 50&100 mile events took place over the weekend of July 27th-29th and the weather provided at least ‘some’ relief early on the course. The 100 mile runners who started on Friday evening at 5:30pm were greeted with no more than slightly overcast skies, but by the time the final runners completed the course in the early hours of Sunday morning, the rain was falling steadily. The 100 mile event started and finished at Coniston, completing a 105 miles clockwise loop of the Lake District. On Saturday at 12 noon, there was also a 50 mile event which started at Dalemain Estate, close to Pooley Bridge and also finished at Coniston.
Entries for the event reached their maximum limit of 920 within 10 days of opening on October 1st 2011. The 9 months prior to the event had been filled with various recce days and close to £14,000 generated for various charities.
The racing in 2012 was hot with Terry Conway smashing his own course record by 2 hours, clocking 19:50 for the 100 mile route. He finished over 2 hours ahead of Paul Tierney and Barry Murray who crossed the line together in 2nd and 3rd. The female 100 crown was taken by Rachel Hill who clocked a super fast 28:47. Catherine Holloway finished second with a 3 way tie for 3rd which consisted of Nicky Taylor, Julie Gardner and Angela Armstrong.
In the 50 event there were 4 men locked in battle throughout the course with the eventual winner being Steve Angus in a time of 8:30, ahead of Grant MacDonald and Matty Brennan. The women’s 50 mile race proved to be the hardest fought with the first 3 women finishing 5th, 6th and 12th overall and all of them smashing the previous record. The eventual winner was Tracy Dean in 8:38, edging out Annie Conway by 3 minutes with Lizzie Wraith in 3rd.
The finishers continued long into Saturday night and even further into Sunday morning, with each being cheered to the finish by the marshals, supporters and other competitors, many of who had been up all night. The organising team would like to thank all the checkpoint staff and volunteers who made the event such a success. Their spirit and enthusiasm throughout the weekend was evident for all to see and the atmosphere they create is the real reason why this event is so popular.
